FLYHT today announced positive results from the flight-test program of its Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS™) on the Boeing ecoDemonstrator aircraft. In conjunction with partners Boeing and Embraer, FLYHT presented the results of the tests to the Airlines Electronic Engineering Committee (AEEC) Global Aircraft Tracking (GAT) Working Group meeting in Kelowna, Canada. The reported analysis and resulting conclusions are receiving a positive response.
FLYHT is proud to participate in the ecoDemonstrator program. The program plays a key role in Boeing’s environmental strategy by using flight testing to accelerate new technologies that can reduce emissions and noise, improve airlines’ gate-to-gate efficiency and help meet other environmental goals.
In 2018, for six weeks, Boeing and FedEx Express worked together to flight-test more than 35 technologies, including FLYHT’s, aboard a FedEx-owned 777 Freighter. The two companies are committed to reducing the environmental impact of their products and advancing technology that improves airplane operational performance.
“One objective of the Boeing ecoDemonstrator program was to evaluate compliance
with future ICAO mandates for Autonomous Distress Tracking and Timely Recovery
of Flight Data. FLYHT met or exceeded all of Boeing’s objectives with AFIRS and with
animation software hosted in our UpTimeTM Enterprise server. FLYHT’s technology
streamed the flight data recorder and cockpit audio over different satellite networks
in real time and created a Virtual CockpitTM for Boeing program personnel.” – Thomas R. Schmutz, CEO, FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd.
FLYHT’s role in the ecoDemonstrator program
FLYHT provided its Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS TM) product and management platform (UpTimeTM Cloud) to Boeing as part of their flight test program. FLYHT participated in the portion of the ecoDemonstrator Program designed to collect data and produce test reports that are necessary to demonstrate Autonomous Distress Tracking and the Timely Recovery of Flight Data in order to drive industry standardization and requirements. FLYHT’s portion of the project was initiated in April 2017 and was completed in early 2018.
In addition to the AFIRS product, FLYHT provided software and technical support. The ecoDemonstrator program tested many features, including enhancements to AFIRS that allowed the product to stream flight data over different satellite systems, including Iridium and an Inmarsat SwiftBroadband connection. The flight data information streamed during the test flights produced real-time animation, demonstrating improved situational awareness of the cockpit during these events. The flight test program also streamed real-time cockpit audio – demonstrating that all the “black box” data can be captured this way.
